About Nicola

I am a professional coach and BACP accredited counselling therapist with 20 years’ experience of working as an individual coach and delivering coaching training.

As Nine Teaching Programme Director, I have developed a quality assured professional coach training award programme via external accreditation with the Association for Coaching. I lead as a consultant on coaching to organisations, enabling them to implement their own internal coaching strategies, through the delivery of accredited training, ongoing coaching supervision and as an individual or team coach.

For over twelve years I have consulted with NHS Trusts, Deaneries and Macmillan Cancer Academies on workforce wellbeing and coaching for growth and I am an experienced group facilitator and clinical supervisor to multi-disciplinary teams and project groups.

I have experience of teaching within many fields, including further & higher education, medical education and private settings. Having previously lectured on Masters Programmes in counselling and psychotherapy at Chester & Keele Universities, I have an academic research interest in vicarious trauma, post-traumatic growth and resilience.

As a BACP Accredited counsellor/psychotherapist, qualifying in 2007, I have enjoyed an extensive psychotherapeutic career, working initially in GP surgeries, followed by specialist NHS Eating Disorder and Personality Disorder services. In 2013 I established an independent practice Nine Wellbeing, to incorporate therapy, coaching and supervision, which has integrated with Nine Teaching.

I have previously held strategic roles within Professional Standards for BACP, consulting on the development of national standards of training in psychotherapy, counselling and coaching.

About Andrew

I began my professional career in helping roles as a health care assistant working with older people with long-term mental health problems and dementia.  Following this, I trained as a Social Worker and, in that role, worked in several different contexts, including with vulnerable adults, children and families, child protection and then specialising in mental health.  I was an 'Approved' practitioner under the Mental Health Act, offering statutory interventions to people experiencing mental health crisis.  I was a trained an qualified Social Work Practice Teacher and assessor.

While as a Social Worker I trained as a therapist, initially undertaking a psychodynamic casework training, informed by family systems theory, before then training as a person-centred therapist.  As a BACP Senior Accredited Counsellor/Psychotherapist I am a pluralistic practitioner, believing people need different things at different times while drawing on my therapy training experiences over the years, integrating psychodynamic, humanistic and cognitive behaviour approaches.

I have worked across my 40+ years' experience of practice in a full range of settings, including with statutory services, schools, colleges, universities, corporate, third sector and private practice.  I am a Professor in Counselling Professions and Mental Health at the University of Chester and work in private practice as a psychotherapist, coach, consultant, trainer and author.

I have written extensively about a range of practice areas, including risk, ethics, mental health, men's mental health and am author of the best-selling text, An Introduction to Counselling and Psychotherapy: From Theory to Practice (Sage, 2022), as well as many practitioner articles, book chapters, academic articles and books.

I was Chair of BACP from 2014-2019 and Editor-in-Chief of Counselling and Psychotherapy Research journal for five years.  I love integrated practice and am committed the integration of psychotherapy and coaching training and practice.
